Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if I am currently in 8th grade?
No, SYEP is for current 9th to 12th grade high school students. You must be in 9th grade before May 2012. Please apply next year or join our summer volunteer program.
Will the program be taught in Korean or English?
Lessons and workshops will mostly be in English, but for Korean-only speakers, translation will be provided. Several people will supervise the program, and they include both English speakers and Korean speakers.
Are there additional fees?
Yes. The camping trip will be range from $10 to $20 per student to account for the costs of reservation and transportation. However, no one is denied participation for lack of funds.
Do students provide their own transportation to the Korean Resource Center?
Yes. The program runs Tuesdays through Fridays, from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. Students must provide their own transportation, or coordinate a carpool with other students or parents.
What kind of programs will SYEP offer?
In the past, SYEP includes several different programs including, but not limited to:
  1. Integrating Korean drumming with modern music (hip hop, reggae)
  2. Workshops and field trips regarding issues in our community:
    • Week 1: Meeting and getting comfortable with students; introducing goals of SYEP
    • Week 2: Meeting community youth organizations/groups with a focus on the history of immigration
    • Week 3: Civic Participation and Education
    • Week 4: Health Access
    • Week 5: Environmental Justice
    • Week 6: Equality
    • Week 7: Community Service (Developing and carrying out a service project with the group)
    • Week 8: Finishing Service projects and Graduation

Workshops are subject to change every year.
